Along with the online resources and eJournals the NGI Library and Archives subscribe to, the below list outlines a selection of free resources for research in various fields including art history.
CORE
“The world’s largest collection of open access research papers”. CORE aims to aggregate all open access research and facilitate unrestricted access to research. It allows users to check more than 66 million open access articles.
BASE: Bielefeld Academic Search Engine
BASE is operated by the Bielefeld University Library, and it offers over 100 million documents from over 4,000 sources. Sixty percent of its content is open access, and you can filter your search accordingly.
Archives Hub
Archives Hub allows you to search subjects, finding relevant information stored in various archives around Scotland, England, and Wales. Be aware that many of these are physical materials only available at certain institutions, but the site does provide some links to digital content, including images linking to full-resolution display and links to full-text files and PDF files, when available.
JURN
JURN is a search tool that provides you with links to various scholarly websites, articles, and journals that are all available for free.
DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals
DOAJ is a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals.
Brill Open Access Collection
Brill is a publishing house established in 1683 with a strong international focus. Along with commercial products, they have a significant amount of open access monographs and journals available through their site.
Taylor and Francis Open Access Collection
Taylor & Francis Group is an international company that publishes books and academic journals. T&F offer a selection of open access books and book chapters across subject areas including economics, environment & sustainability, geography, history, law, media & cultural studies, politics, sociology and more.
OAPEN: Online Library and Publication Platform
The OAPEN Library contains freely accessible academic books from over 250 publishers focusing on a variety of fields including art and design.
Digital Repository of Ireland
The Digital Repository of Ireland is a national digital repository for Ireland’s humanities, social sciences, and cultural heritage data. You can browse and search across multiple collections from some of the finest Irish institutions.
The Open Library of Humanities (OLH)
Charitable organisation dedicated to publishing open access scholarship. The OLH publishing platform supports academic journals from across the humanities disciplines, as well as hosting its own multidisciplinary journal.
Internet Archive
Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more. They provide access to many full-text digitised libraries.
Project MUSE (Limited Availability: COVID-19)
Project MUSE have made a selection of scholarly content temporarily available for free on their platform in response to the challenges created by COVID-19. The date the content is available until varies by publisher but many are currently available until 30th June 2020.
Mirabile: Digital Archives for Medieval Culture
(Limited Availability: COVID-19)
Currently freely available until 15th May 2020 in response to COVID-19, Mirabile is a research resource combing digital collections of two organisations: International Society for the Study of Medieval Latin Culture and Fondazione Ezio Franceschini.
